This Paleo Lemon Poppy Seed Bread is easy, lightly sweetened, and perfect for breakfast or a snack. So moist and delicious while still being gluten free and dairy free.
Lemon Poppy Seed bread has been probably my favorite bread for a long time. I can't remember when I first tried it, but I know I loved it immediately. I love anything citrus, but this bread is the best. Making a paleo version wasn't hard at all. It's sweetened only with honey and it's definitely not as sweet as a regular loaf is, but I think it's perfect.

Ingredients for lemon bread
The ingredients are pretty simple and you most likely have them on hand.
Almond and coconut flour- the mixture of these two give the best moist texture.
Honey- the sweetener to the bread. It's not overly sweet. Maple syrup could be subbed if needed.
Melted coconut oil- I like using butter flavor coconut oil for a buttery taste, but refined coconut oil would also work great.
Lemon zest and juice- this is what gives the loaf the tangy flavor. You have the option to using a mix of lemon juice and milk or all lemon juice. I think all lemon juice is better, but I love tangy, citrusy treats- it's up to you!
Eggs- these help bind the bread together and make it fluffy.
Poppy seeds- of course for the added flavor and texture.
One Bowl Bread
You will love how easy it is to make. Mixed in one bowl, by hand, and in the oven in only a few minutes. Juicing and zesting the lemons is probably what takes the longest and that's not bad at all especially with a zester and juicer. You can have this whipped up in no time.
This paleo lemon poppy seed bread is quick to make, so simple, and packed with lemon flavor! You will love it! A classic treat made-over and still just as delicious.

Hi! I made this lemon poppy seed bread and my loaf came out really dense and in some areas gooey.... I dont know what I did incorrectly. I didn't have almond flour so used regualr baking flour with coconut flour. Could this have been the reason it turned super dense?
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Stephanie- Yes, that could definitely be it. It doesn't convert 1:1. I suggest trying it as written.

I made this recipe en masse, for christmas gifts for my clients this year. I multiplied the recipe by 12, so I could make 24 mini loaves. I made some paleo lemon curd to gift with the bread. One word: PHENOMENAL. The bread is great, and just the perfect amount of crumbly. I had a little bit of batter left, so I made some muffins. They turned out great, but they did stick to the liners, which I kind of expected. After baking so many loaves, I didn't feel like trimming any parchment! I loved this recipe, and will make it over and over. Thank you!

Hello, I am an amateurBaker! My dad is an extreme health nut so I'd love to bake this for him but I only have almond flour at the moment. Would it be ok to just use that? And if not what would happen to the bread without the coconut flour?
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Jay- the combination of almond and coconut give it the best texture. Sometimes just almond can be too dense and crumbly. You could try it, but I highly recommend trying as written. Coconut flour is very affordable and lasts a long time. Hope that helps!
Aileen says
Do you have any suggestions for a honey substitute? I'm allergic to honey. Maple syrup seems like it may be the closest thing but I'm worried that the maple flavor may interfere with the lemon flavor too much.
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Aileen- Maple will work great. Hope you love it!
Kayla says
Can you make these into cupcakes instead of a loaf ?
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Kayla- yes, I think that would work great. Bake maybe 25 minutes or so. That's just a guess so keep an eye on them. Enjoy!
Laura says
Hi there,
I’m wondering if I used Bob’s Paleo flour if I should sub 1:1 ratios? Ie 1 3/4 cup of Bob’s to replace almond and coconut flour? Thanks so much!
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Laura- I'm sorry for the delayed response. You should be able to use it 1:1. Hope you try it!
Skye R. says
Hi, I was wondering if it's possible to substitute the eggs for flax eggs or chia eggs, and if you could substitute the almond flour for rice flour or more coconut flour? We can't eat eggs or dairy or sugar or gluten.
Thanks!
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Skye- I think flax or chia eggs would work. You can't use coconut flour in place of the almond flour, but you can try rice flour. It may have a different texture, but you probably know that with the substitutions. Hope that helps!
