This Paleo Whole30 ketchup is naturally sweetened and packed with flavor! Easy to make and so delicious you'll want to eat it off the spoon.
I love ketchup on everything- eggs, mac and cheese, hot dogs, chicken, baked potatoes. Making it homemade is super easy and so flavorful. The original recipe I followed had honey in it so I knew I needed to change it to make it Whole30 approved. I was a little skeptical of adding dates at first, but they work so perfectly. You can't taste them- it just adds a subtle sweetness that balances perfectly with the spices and acidity.
So don't be afraid of the dates! Confession: last time I made it I didn't have enough dates so I used half raisins and it worked great- Yay!
I love the idea of making it homemade because I can completely control what I'm adding. It comes together so quick too! There's almost no prep time and it cooks for 30 minutes. You could make this while cooking other food- it's that easy!
Here's all the ingredients you'll need. You can use apple cider vinegar in place of the coconut vinegar and water in place of the bone broth if you don't have any on hand.
Put all the ingredients in the pan, cook for 20 minutes and turn off the heat. Blend until smooth and cook for another 10 minutes.
Pour the ketchup into jars and store in the fridge.
So simple!!
It's better the next day once it has a chance to chill and let the flavors blend together more. This isn't as smooth as the store bought kind, but I like it that way. If you prefer smoother ketchup, just put it through a fine mesh strainer.
While this is a great sauce to satisfy all your dipping needs and amazing in these paleo sloppy joes!

I tried making the ketchup this afternoon and it's awesome 🙂 I used tomato puree and a couple tablespoons of water to get a smoother texture, and turned the dates into a paste before adding them, and it's great! I can't wait to try it after it's had time to meld.

This looks delicious and I'm making it tomorrow! We're a week into our second Whole30. I intentionally decided to do this one during a school break (I'm a teacher). With one round under our belts and the extra time on my hands, it's been a lot of fun getting more creative and trying new things I didn't have time to before! Quick question - can it be frozen? As much as I love ketchup, I can't see the two of us going through 3 cups of ketchup quick enough. Thanks!

Thanks, Rachel! Good luck with your Whole30! I'm not sure if it can be frozen, but I think so. You may be surprised how fast it goes and I highly recommend that you try my sloppy joes. It uses this ketchup and it's the most popular recipe on my site- everyone loves it. Here is the link to that: http://www.jaysbakingmecrazy.com/2015/04/13/sloppy-joes-paleo-whole30/ Let me know if you have any other questions!

I'm generally skeptical of homemade, Whole30 compliant versions of store-bought condiments, but I have to say: this really IS better than any ketchup I have ever tasted. Thanks for this recipe; I'm never buying ketchup again!

Hello!
Just wanted to say this ketchup is amazing and it had helped myself and parents through our whole30 30 day routine. We're about 1/3 finished and slather this ketchup on most everything. Random question: I doubled the recipe and for some reason it seems really thick - like maybe I over cooked it or added too much applesauce. Any thoughts?

This recipe looks delicious! I was wondering how long it lasts in the fridge. Thanks!
Jessica DeMay says
Thanks, Stephanie! It lasts about 2 weeks in the fridge. It may last longer but we go through it so quick. I hope you try it and love it!

Hi Jessica!
This recipe sounds great. I would like to try both versions : with dates and with honey. Can you say to me how much honey is needed to do this recipe? I did my Whole30 with much self-control, and without ketchup during 30 days (so hard haha. I adore the taste of ketchup) but now I would like to eat some meals with honey.
I will use the "date version" when I will return to the whole30 in 3 months 🙂
Anyway, thanks for your recipe. It has been a while that I was looking for a good recipe like this 🙂
Greetings from Belgium!
Y

This ketchup is busting with flavor! I love it! So easy to make too! The only thing I did different was less red pepper, because I can't take too much spicy. Can't wait to try it with a shrimp cocktail tonight and will be using it to make the meatloaf soon!
Jessica DeMay says
Thanks, Theresa!! I'm so glad you like it!! I bet it will be delicious with the shrimp and we love using it for meatloaf. Thanks for the feedback- glad you enjoy it!
