This Paleo Whole30 ketchup is naturally sweetened and packed with flavor! Easy to make and so delicious you'll want to eat it off the spoon.
I love ketchup on everything- eggs, mac and cheese, hot dogs, chicken, baked potatoes. Making it homemade is super easy and so flavorful. The original recipe I followed had honey in it so I knew I needed to change it to make it Whole30 approved. I was a little skeptical of adding dates at first, but they work so perfectly. You can't taste them- it just adds a subtle sweetness that balances perfectly with the spices and acidity.
So don't be afraid of the dates! Confession: last time I made it I didn't have enough dates so I used half raisins and it worked great- Yay!
I love the idea of making it homemade because I can completely control what I'm adding. It comes together so quick too! There's almost no prep time and it cooks for 30 minutes. You could make this while cooking other food- it's that easy!
Here's all the ingredients you'll need. You can use apple cider vinegar in place of the coconut vinegar and water in place of the bone broth if you don't have any on hand.
Put all the ingredients in the pan, cook for 20 minutes and turn off the heat. Blend until smooth and cook for another 10 minutes.
Pour the ketchup into jars and store in the fridge.
So simple!!
It's better the next day once it has a chance to chill and let the flavors blend together more. This isn't as smooth as the store bought kind, but I like it that way. If you prefer smoother ketchup, just put it through a fine mesh strainer.
While this is a great sauce to satisfy all your dipping needs and amazing in these paleo sloppy joes!

I don't usually leave comments but this is, hands down, the best whole 30 approved ketchup. Ever. You guys, make it! I have made my fair share of ketchups during my various stints on whole 30 and there is no comparison. When I made my last batch I was out of canned tomatoes so I used a can of tomato sauce instead and it was delicious. Following another reviewers brilliant idea, I mixed some of it with horseradish and fresh lemon juice and it made the perfect cocktail sauce for shrimp. Nomnomnom. Thanks so much!

I'm getting ready to make my third batch of this ketchup. It's amazing! I love it. I'll never eat store bought again. I even take some with me when I go out. I typically will eat.a burger with this ketchup avocado and tomato with no bun. YUM.

I just started my Whole30 and made this for the first time. Its awesome. I cannot believe how many different things i am making from scratch and with natural organic ingredients. The best part is that the recipies like this ketchup is sooo much better. Bolder flavor so you only need a little bit and due to that you overall consume much fewer calories, let alone all of the additives and sugar in the store bought variety. yummmmmmmmmm
Jessica DeMay says
Thank you for trying my recipe, Shannon! Isn't it crazy how much better homemade is? I'm so glad you like it. Thanks for the great feedback 🙂
Sarah says
Ready to make this, but wondering what type of bone broth you are using?
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Sarah- I usually use chicken because it's what I have on hand. You can just use water though if you don't have any bone broth. I think beef broth would work just fine as well. Hope you love it!

I don't have an immersion blender, so I pre-blended everything in my food processor, and I think it turned out great! Thanks for the recipe! I can finally eat fried eggs! LOL

Can I can this using pressure cooker? I would like to make bigger batch and can some!
Jessica DeMay says
Hi Heather- what a great idea! I definitely think that would work. I'd say maybe 5-7 minutes, then blend with immersion blender. That's my guess. Hope it turns out great!
